Unsettled infield defense → ‘9th place fall’ in 51 days…Samsung says commander’s warnings ‘didn’t work’
The Samsung Lions failed to end their losing streak despite a warning from their manager.
Samsung fell into a four-game losing streak after suffering a 6-7 reverse against KT Wiz in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at KT Wiz Park in Suwon on Saturday. The loss dropped Samsung’s season record to 26-34 (.433), and the team slipped to ninth place after 51 days since April 26.
After committing four errors in a three-game midweek series, Samsung was shaken by three errors in the 16th game.안전놀이터
Second baseman Kim Ji-chan, who had committed a fielding error in the previous day’s game against the LG Twins, was hampered by another error. In the bottom of the fifth inning, leadoff hitter Ahn Chi-young’s grounder rolled toward second base, and Kim threw to first, but the throw was high and first baseman Gong Min-kyu made a jumping catch that barely prevented the ball from falling backward. The outcome was a safe run.
The next batter, Anthony Alford, singled to put runners on first and second, so the Samsung bench inserted Kim Ho-jae at second base in place of Kim Ji-chan. There was no injury or illness, just a “reprimand” for an error.
Before the game, Samsung manager Park Jin-man said, “You can make mistakes, but you have to be clear about what you can do.” “As I said before, if you’re in scoring position, it’s better to give one run instead of two runs by blocking it with your body,” he said. “I should have judged that quickly, but yesterday, even though he was on second or third base, Kim Ji-chan couldn’t block it with his glove or body.” He expressed his disappointment with the infield defense.
However, despite Park’s emphasis on the stability of the defense, when Kim made an error, the Samsung bench boldly ordered a substitution.
After Kim was replaced, the Samsung infield made another error. In the bottom of the eighth inning, with the score 6-5, third baseman Kim Young-woong caught Park Byung-ho’s ordinary grounder to third base, allowing Lee Sang-ho to score from first base.
Samsung lost the lead in the bottom of the ninth on Lee Ho-yeon’s RBI single. The infielders who made errors in defense contributed to the loss.
