Shin Yubin leads women’s table tennis into Asia Championship final…to face China
Korea Women’s Table Tennis has reached the final of the Asian Table Tennis Championships Team event.
The South Korean women’s table tennis team, led by head coach Oh Kwang-heon, swept aside Hong Kong 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ITTF-ATTU Asian Table Tennis Championships Team event at the Pyeongchang Dome in Gangwon Province on Friday. South Korea will play China for the gold medal tonight.
The Koreans took advantage of the absence of Hong Kong ace Du Hoi-kem (ranked 32nd in the world), who was sidelined with a wrist injury. Hong Kong fielded a team of 19-year-old Li Hoi-man Karen (ranked 178th), “Chapter 2” Zhu Cheng-ju (ranked 55th) and veteran Li Ho-ching (ranked 108th), but they were no match for Korea.
Korea’s defensive player Seo Hyo-won (Korea Horse Society- 61st) swept Li Hoi-man Karen 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 12-10) in straight sets, while Shin Yoo-bin (Korean Air- 9th) ran away with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-7) victory in an ace battle with Joo Cheong-ju. Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities – No. 33) followed with a 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 14-12) win over Li Ho-ching.
After the match, the players said, “We struggled a bit in the previous day’s match, so we came out with a little more determination. We will play the team final against China with no regrets, win or lose.”
China had earlier upset defending champions Japan in the quarterfinals with Sun Yingxia (1st), Chen Meng (2nd) and Chen Xingtong (3rd), who were joined by Hayata Hina (7th), Hirano Miu (14th) and Ito Mima (8th).스포츠토토
Oh Kwang-heon, head coach of the women’s national team, said, “Playing in Korea has its advantages, but there can be more pressure and nerves. The players are handling it well. We can’t win against China by playing defensively. We will be aggressive and active.”
Korean women’s table tennis has only won the Asian Championships twice before, in 1988 and 1990.
