The KIA Tigers came from behind to win the first game of their home doubleheader against the LG Twins of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) 7-6 at KIA Champions Field in Gwangju on Monday. It snapped a two-game losing streak. They remained in fifth place with 58 wins, 52 losses and two ties. Leaders LG ended their two-game winning streak. 70 wins, 45 losses and two ties.
LG was favored in the starting matchup, but KIA’s replacement starter Hwang Dong-ha pitched well. He filled in for Mario Sanchez, who was sidelined with elbow pain and rehab. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Meanwhile, LG starter Lim Chan-kyu gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits (one home run) with one walk and two strikeouts in 5⅔ innings.
KIA struck first in the third inning when Hwang Dae-in, the leadoff hitter, pulled a changeup from LG starter Lim Chan-kyu for a leadoff solo shot to left field. A batter later, Park Chan-ho singled to center field, and two batters later, Na Sung-beom doubled to center field to score another run.
KIA added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Leadoff hitter Socrates Brito hit a double to right-center field. Kim Sun-bin laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and third. Socrates scored when Lee Woo-sung’s throw to shortstop Oh Ji-hwan fell between the crotches.
LG tried to catch up in the top of the fifth inning. Oh Ji-hwan singled to right-center, Park Dong-won singled to left, and Moon Sung-joo singled to center. Park Hae-min’s sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, and Hong Chang-ki’s sacrifice fly to right field cut the deficit to one.
KIA broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Two batters later, Lee Woo-sung doubled down the left field line. When Hwang Dae-in walked, he stole third. Kim Tae-gun followed with a single to right field. Park Chan-ho was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Kim Kyu-sung. Kim also stole third base.
However, LG has been playing the best baseball this season. They tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, Park Dong-won hit a solo shot to left field. Moon Sung-joo and Park Hae-min drew back-to-back walks. Park Hae-min’s hit was a walk, but the umpire called for a video review of the foul tip strike.
When the game resumed, the momentum shifted to LG. With runners on first and second, Hong Chang-ki singled to right. Moon Sung-joo stole second, and Kia right fielder Na Sung-beom stepped up to second and threw to first baseman Big Hae-min, who was heading for third. Safe. Meanwhile, first baseman Hong Chang-ki advanced to second, and KIA third baseman Kim Do-young threw to Park Chan-ho, who was covering second base. Also safe.
At this point, Park Chan-ho was unable to check Park Hae-min, who made the tag while facing the outfield. Park Chan-ho paused for a moment after the safe call, and then caught Park Hae-min’s home rush one tempo late. The throw was on target, but Park’s hand was a little quicker. Dramatic tie.
LG went on to lead off with an infield single as Shin Min-jae’s pitch deflected heavily off of pitcher Jeon Sang-hyun. Kim Hyun-soo singled and stole second, putting runners on first and third. Kim Hyun-soo hit a big grounder out of bounds, which was caught by Kim Sun-bin, the second baseman who was fielding in front of the plate. A dramatic comeback for LG.스포츠토토
