LeBron James, 38, has come under fire for comments suggesting retirement, but he also expressed confidence in next season.

LeBron ended his 20th NBA season on March 23 after a 113-111 loss in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals to the Denver Nuggets.

In that game, LeBron scored 40 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out nine assists in 47 minutes and 56 seconds of action. LeBron made several stops on Nikola Jokic, drawing two offensive fouls, and showed incredible defensive prowess locking down Jamal Murray and attacking Denver’s defense with post-ups when matched up with Murray and Kentavious-Caldwell-Pope in a two-man game on offense.

After a month-long recovery, LeBron reportedly said after the season that he might need surgery on his injured foot, and he reportedly traveled to several hospitals until he met with a doctor who told him he didn’t need surgery.

“I’m going to get an MRI and see how it’s healed, how it’s not healed, and then I’ll decide,” LeBron told ESPN when asked if he could have surgery this summer.

Through the end of February, LeBron was averaging 29.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game on 50.1 percent shooting from the field (22.6 attempts) and 75.9 percent from the free throw line (6.3 attempts). He finished the playoffs averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game.

When asked if he could return to his old form next season, LeBron was positive: “I’m still better than the top 10 percent of the NBA, so I’m probably top 5 percent,” he said, sounding confident.

Meanwhile, LeBron said something in his postgame press conference that hinted that he might consider retirement this offseason. No one knows if he’s considering retirement because of his injuries or because he’s not confident that the Lakers will hoist the NBA championship trophy next season.
