“I should be batting, but I’m in trouble” ‘Super talented’ first-year MVP has manager worried, but will a two-hit wonder emerge next year?

Ahn Ji-won (16), a first-year student who won the tournament MVP and led Busan High School to its first Golden Lion title, has revealed her dreams of becoming a two-hit wonder.

Leading the team to victory was Ahn Ji-won, who is only a first-year player but has been a regular starter. She started in right field at No. 2 and went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a triple, an RBI and a run scored. In six games, she batted 5-for-6 (18-for-10) with nine RBIs, nine runs scored, one stolen base and a 1.322 OPS, and swept the Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Hitter and Most RBIs awards.

In a post-game interview, Busan Go head coach Park Kye-won said, “She did an amazing job. Ahn Ji-won actually enrolled as a pitcher. She still wants to be a pitcher. However, the second and third year pitchers are thick, so I suggested that she try batting for a year to get a chance to play. She readily accepted, and that’s how we got the big break today,” he laughed.

Ahn Ji-won made it clear that she wants to be a two-hitter from next year. “Koo Jong throws a fastball, slider and curveball. My fastball reached 139km/h and 140km/h in middle school. Right now, I’m not pitching at all and focusing on hitting. But I want to pitch from the second grade onwards,” he said.

Coach Park Kye-won is worried about Ahn’s determination to pitch. Coach Park Kye-won laughed, saying, “Ahn Ji-won has a great desire to pitch,” and said, “I have to hit the bat, but I’m in trouble.” Ahn Ji-won happily expressed her worries.

Ahn Ji-won replied, “I have a good shoulder, but it’s a little disappointing to be a hitter. I still want to be a pitcher. As a pitcher, Shohei Ohtani (Angels) is my role model. I don’t know of anyone else who can pitch and hit as well as him, but I can do it. I’m determined to work hard and become as good as him.”
