Doosan snaps 3-game losing streak with win over Lotte…’Eight-game winning streak’ Kia leaps to No. 4
The Doosan Bears snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Lotte Giants.
Doosan won 2-0 against Lotte in the Shinhan Bank Solar KBO League 2023 at Sajik Stadium on Wednesday behind a strong pitching performance from starter Brandon Waddell.
After snapping a three-game losing streak, Doosan (55 wins, 1 tie, 54 losses) is looking to reclaim fifth place.
Brandon earned his seventh win of the season (3-0) with six innings of five-hit, one-walk, four-strikeout ball. Brandon, who rejoined the Doosan organization in late June as a replacement pitcher, is looking to reach double-digit wins.
Brandon also extended his road winning streak to five games.
Kang Seung-ho went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Doosan’s Yang Yang-ji delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth inning.
With 51 wins and 59 losses on the season, seventh-place Lotte is moving further and further away from “fall baseball. Lotte has lost four straight games at home.
LOTTE starter Charlie Barnes pitched seven innings of five-hit ball, striking out four and allowing one run (unearned), but could not get any support from his offense, dropping his eighth loss of the season (nine wins). It was the third straight game that he failed to reach the 10-win threshold.
The Lotte bats were held scoreless despite five hits.
Doosan struck first.
In the top of the third inning, Doosan took advantage of a throwing error to put runners on first and third when Kang Seung-ho singled and Lee Yoo-chan grounded to third. Lee then stole second, allowing Kang Seung-ho to score from third to take the lead.
However, Doosan was unable to add another run as Barnes’ throw was blocked.
Lotte was also unable to capitalize on Brandon and remained scoreless until the sixth inning.
Clinging to a precarious 1-0 lead, Doosan opened the scoring in the eighth with a leadoff single by Kim Tae-geun, a sacrifice bunt by Park Kye-beom, and a walk to Yang Seok-hwan. Yang then followed with an RBI single to center field to make it 2-0.
Doosan’s second pitcher, Park Chi-guk, pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh to improve to 11-2 with two saves, while Kim Myung-shin pitched a scoreless inning to improve to 13-2 with three saves.
In the ninth inning, Doosan closer Jung Chul-won pitched one hitless inning to earn his sixth save of the season (5-4, 11 saves).
Lotte was held hitless after the sixth inning.
The KIA Tigers won a hard-fought game against the SSG Landers, 8-6, at SSG Landers Field in Incheon.
Kim Do-young led the way with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a walk-off solo home run (his third of the season) in the top of the ninth inning. Kim Tae-gun hit a tying RBI single in the eighth inning and pinch-hitter Ko Jong-wook delivered the game-winning RBI single. Hwang Dae-in hit his fourth two-run home run of the season.
With Pajuk’s eight-game winning streak snapped, KIA moved up to fourth place and closed the gap on third-place SSG to 1.5 games.
KIA also extended its winning streak to five games against SSG, six games against Munhak, and four games away from home.
SSG’s bullpen, including Go Hyo-joon, Seo Jin-yong, and Lee I-ro, collapsed one after another. Closer Seo Jin-yong recorded his second blown save of the season and suffered his third loss of the season (3-3, 34 saves).
Mired in a four-game losing streak, SSG (60 wins, 1 draw, 51 losses) remains precariously in third place.
Kiwoom Heroes cruised to a 7-0 home win over KT Wiz at the Gocheok SkyDome.
Riding a four-game winning streak, ninth-ranked Kiwoom (51 wins, 3 draws, 70 losses) has paved the way for an escape from the bottom half of the standings.
Kiwoom’s foreign-born pitcher Ariel Furado earned the win with 6⅔ innings of no-hit ball, one walk and eight strikeouts.
Riding a four-game winning streak, Hurado improved to 9-8 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.72.
Ronnie Dawson delivered the game-winning hit in the third inning, while Lim Byung-wook went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Kim Xiang went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
KT (63 wins, 2 ties, 50 losses), which has lost three in a row, has an emergency against second-place Suwon.
