“Baseball is a business, and I’m grateful to LG for five years…” despite endless replacements for ‘9.1 billion-life ace’
“I think baseball is a business, and every team is trying to win, and if you need to make a foreign substitution to win, you do it.”
LG Twins foreign-born pitcher Casey Kelly, 34, has been the subject of release speculation all season. No wonder, given his poor performance. In the KBO, three foreign players make up a very large percentage of a team’s roster. More than half, in fact. It’s no wonder that the most important one-two punch and center fielders in the starting lineup are foreigners, so players who don’t perform in the first half of the season are usually sent packing.
Kelly has been playing in the KBO for five years now in an LG uniform. In five seasons, he has pitched in 134 games with 65 wins (37 losses), 816⅓ innings, 633 strikeouts, and a 3.13 ERA. His salary starts at $1 million in 2019 and rises to $1.8 million in 2023. The total of his five-year deal with LG adds up to $7.2 million. It’s no wonder that expectations are rising for Kelly.
But this year, he struggled for a long time. In 20 games, he went 7-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 119 1/3 innings. There have been several blowouts, with only 11 quality starts. It has been said that the first-place LG needs to replace Kelly and build a more stable starting rotation if they want to challenge for a championship.
Despite the endless speculation, LG president Cha Myung-seok and head coach Yeom Kyung-yup have been unmoved. Both Cha and Yeom have met with Kelly and conveyed the message that “we still believe in him.”
“We’re still hopeful,” Yoon said ahead of the 28th game against the Jamsil Doosan Bears. I hope he can return to his old self. Kelly needs to do his part to get back on track. I’m eager.” He hoped for a good pitching performance.
For the first time in the second half, Kelly pitched a game that could serve as a springboard for a rebound. She pitched seven innings of 101 pitches with eight hits, no walks, three strikeouts and two runs to earn her seventh win of the season. It was his first win in 51 days since June 6 against the Gochuk Kiwoom Heroes. LG won 9-2 to extend its winning streak to two games.
He benefited from adjustments to his curveball and slider, which he hadn’t liked for the first half of the All-Star break. Kelly threw 29 curveballs and 19 sliders, which worked well offensively, with 18 strikes on the curve and 16 on the slider. His pitches were all good overall, with 72 strikes out of 101 pitches.
“It wasn’t a fastball issue,” Kelly said. My first-half struggles were due to my curveball and slider. I wasn’t throwing them for strikes when I needed to, and I wasn’t getting good swings on them. I worked on my curveball and slider during the offseason, and I think I’ve gotten better. I feel like I’m getting better, so I’m happy with that. If I want to do well in the second half of the season, I think it’s important to have good command of my changeup and slider.”
He brushed off the endless trade speculation. “I think baseball is a business,” Kelly said. Every team is trying to win. If you need to bring in a foreigner to win, you do it. They’re trying to do what they need to do to get their team in a position to win. I understand that,” he concluded.
Still, she expressed her gratitude to the club for showing faith in her. “I’ve been playing for five years, but what I’m most grateful for is throwing the ball in a great ballpark with good teammates at LG. I’ve had casual meetings with the manager and general manager, and they always support me and say, ‘Go out there and do what you can. ‘ They’re always supportive and say, ‘Go out there and do what you can do,’ and I’m grateful for that.”
She’s going to believe in herself until the end of the season, and then she’ll be able to lift the trophy with her team.온라인바카라
“I think believing in myself is the most important thing and the first solution. It’s true that the season is not going the way I want it to. The more I think about it, the more I feel like the only thing I can do is work hard in the gym, prepare well for games and go out there and throw my best. We have a really good roster right now and a good atmosphere. It’s nice to have guys playing baseball together and playing for each other. We just have to do our best every time we go out there and we’ll be where we want to be (winning).”
